the exhibition

in this body of work, yates’ paintings describe of a series of observations of actual and partially recalled places, objects and memories in the form of sketches, photographs and recordings of both a written and verbal nature. he re-contextualizes these experiences by translating them into paintings and inevitably lose information; this fallout is apparent in the paintings sparse and fragmented nature. he attempts to continually interrogate material and image to the point where he makes sense of his constructed compositions, as they are often of undetermined scenes.

after yates discovered and was drawn to Lambay, a private and unpopulated island off of the east coast of Dublin, he was inspired. he came across an abandoned real tennis court and was alone on the island for a week through his explorations. the desolate nature of this space heightened yates’ sense of isolation. for the exhibition, yates built the installation himself to replicate the real tennis court he encountered.
